Works For Me Wednesday
This week my tip involves traveling with kids. When ever we are about in embark on a long journey, which to my kid involves anything longer than about 10 miles, but anyway, we head to the library first. But not just for books, which aren't usually allowed to travel for fear they won't come back. We go for books on tape or CD. We are lucky our van has both players. It has been wonderful. My children have listened to many stories that we haven't had the time to do as read alouds at home. Just a few have been:
- several Magic Tree House books by Mary Pope Osborne
- Ballett Shoes by Noel Streatfield
- the first Mrs. Piggle Wiggle book by Betty Mac Donald
- the orginal Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder
- we currently have The Railway Children by Edith Nesbit in our player

We LOVE books on tape. Not only for long trips, but for tooling around town. Its such a great way to expose the kids to great literature that is just out of their reading level. Great tip to share!
We always have a book on tape in our car. We have 'read' more books than I can count that way. You have GOT to get the Junie B. Jones books read by Lana Quintal. She is the PERFECT Junie B.
we do books on tape/cd for us grownups, makes the trip go so fast. sometimes we miss the exit ! :)

A series of books that were great favorites of my son (now 23) were "The Boxcar Children." Your kids might enjoy those!

Good one...we just recently got a library card and made our first check-out of books, now I'm goigng to have to check out the books on tapes! Tks, I never thought about this.
We do this, too!! Only, we even use it for shorter trips around town. Sometimes, we bring it in because it is so interesting, and we sit around the stereo to listen. I LOVE your idea! :)
